I speak with many adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD. Often their children carry the same diagnosis, and between them sits a collection of medications intended to help regulate attention.
ADHD is real. Anyone who has struggled to direct their mind knows how difficult that can be. We do not arrive in this world as masters of our attention. Self-mastery is a skill, and like every skill, it must be developed.
Imagine your mind as a beam of light.
Wherever that beam goes, your life follows. Your attention pulls your body, your emotions, your energy, and eventually your actions. Together, mind and body create what we call a life.
The challenge is that the light wanders.
It wanders into memory, fear, fantasy, regret, comparison, and distraction. Sometimes it becomes so scattered that a person feels as though they are no longer steering the ship.
A diagnosis can help explain this experience. It can provide language, understanding, and sometimes useful tools. But there is a danger in confusing an explanation for an identity.
The moment we say, “I am ADHD,” we risk becoming smaller than we are.
A diagnosis may describe a pattern of attention, but it cannot fully describe a person.
Human beings are remarkably adaptable. People outgrow habits, beliefs, fears, and limitations they once thought permanent. They learn to focus. They learn to observe their minds. They learn to return their attention to the present moment.
The mind reaches into life the way a fisherman reaches into the sea. It catches an experience and gives it a name. Yet the name is never the whole reality. The fish and the sea belong together. The story and the life belong together.
What matters is not where the mind wanders, but whether we can notice it wandering and gently bring it back.
The goal is not to become someone without distraction. The goal is to learn to return. That return is discipline.

Back from yesterday’s regrets.
Back from the argument replaying itself in your head.
Back from the story about who you are.
Back to this moment.
Back to what is here.
Back to what is real.
Not once, but again and again.
That return is discipline.
